George Mason University has taken the plunge and has become one of the first colleges or universities to use food delivery robots. Developed by Sodexo, a food service operator, and Starship Technologies, a delivery robot service, George Mason students, faculty, and staff with iPhones or Androids can order food or drinks through the app and have it delivered anywhere on campus. The delivery service runs from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm and costs $1.99 to be delivered. Students can even use their meal plans for the service! At the moment, GMU community members have access to Dunkin’ Donuts, Blaze Pizza, Second Stop, and Starbucks via the delivery robots. Sodexo, Starship Technologies, and GMU expect more companies and restaurants to jump on board in the near future. The app works by having the user request a meal or snack of their choosing, then pin their location. This allows the user to follow the delivery robot along its route and are then notified once it arrives at their location. Users must go outside to meet their delivery robot and collect their order because the robots cannot get inside the buildings. At the moment, there are 25 robots in service and depending on the order and the user’s location, the robots can deliver in about 30 minutes or less. The delivery robots can carry 20 pounds each that you can visualize as about 6 dozen donuts or 10 large pizzas. Everyone on GMU’s campus is ecstatic about the campuses new additions. Not only is this technology something the campus can work on strengthening and expanding, but a clever and accessible way for students to get food on the go or when they are glued to study session in the library. Sodexo and Starship Technologies are excited to see where their technology takes them and are planning to bring the robots to other colleges and universities soon.

I don’t know about you, but my vote is for Meredith College to be their next addition to the program!
