On March 21, 2006, the first tweet was sent and since then twitter has grown to become one of the biggest social networking services of our time. The makers of Twitter imagined they were just creating an alternative way of text messaging. Little did they know that Twitter would become an increasingly important part of our lives today? With over 305 million users worldwide and still growing it is only second to Facebook in the most used social networking site.
So what is so fascinating about a 140 characters post, it’s because they are easy to read and remember, there are no topics that are out of bounds in Twitter, people love being followed and listened to and Twitter creates the perfect platform for that. Twitter allows everyday people to interact with influential people such as presidents, musicians, and actors.
It can be used a tool to achieve simple aim of tracking and directing attention from various groups of your interest with the use of hashtags, #BlackLivesMatter, #IceBucketChallenge, #LoveWins, #BringBackOurGirls #PrayforParis, these are just a few hashtags that have been greatly influenced and brought to the world’s attention with the help of Twitter. As seen with the Arab Spring of 2011 through Twitter, protests where scheduled and publicity of people’s anger where made more to everyone which eventually led to political reforms in the region. When Hurricane Sandy came down on the East Coast, Twitter was a main source of communication to share news, videos and pictures of the devastation.
Imagine watching the Super bowl, Oscars or any major event without having your say or seeing if millions of other people have the same views as you. Remember when Ellen DeGeneres broke Twitter with her group selfie with famous celebrities. It was Retweeted 2.6 million times that twitter went down for more than 20 minutes.
In 10 years Twitter has transformed the way we communicate worldwide, get our news, inform ourselves on world issues and given a voice to the voiceless. Here is to many more years to come.
